Hear Ye Hear Ye!

It is with great pride (and some serious confusion) that i welcome you to the Spiral today. Please, sit down, make yourself comfortable, and I will tell you how the Spiral as we know it came to be.

The Spiral was originally, not the Spiral at all. It was Procrastination, a site started while the creator was attempting to get out of writing a paper. Which would have been well and good, only the creator was in Ireland for the summer during this time, knew nothing of html and came up with a generic, lousy layout with essentially nothing on it. Which she had to design while in ireland on a really picky network.

alia returned to the states, and discovered the joys of Netscape Composer, which did all the work of html for her. at this point, the first incarnation of Quote Chaos came into being. mainly quotes from friends and books, and a couple of sites that no longer exist.

The rest of the page at that time was boring and stupid.

At various points, things were added and subtracted, such as Paranoia, which was the Y2K game page, which no one but the creator thought was funny. Bansidhe, the list of all the books the creator had ever read, with links to them on amazon. Thursday, the tribute to The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, that alia still insists will be completed one day. The Loony Bin, a section of Quote Chaos dedicated to Monty Python. All are now gone..or in limbo on alianora’s hard drive. D&E Publishing, in its first incarnation, no longer exists, but the writings do, and if anyone has any interest in reading stuff that is a)non fic related and b)pretty weird, please contact the writer at alia@silverspiral.net and let her know.

Somewhere along the line, Procrastination changed servers at least 4 times, and picked up a cjb address, so that visitors would not have to go to the trouble of learning the new address every time.

Finally, in a fit of frustration after the last free server decided to disappear and take Procrastination with it, the idea was born.

alia would buy her own domain name. and get real, paid for hosting. so that the site would not again disappear into oblivion.

2 years ago, on this day of October 22, alianora entered a multitude of names into the domain search at go daddy in an attempt to find anything that would fit her and still be available. “procrastination”, “paranoia”, all were taken. alia was getting concerned.

finally, alia’s attention was caught by the necklace she was wearing. it was a celtic triskal, and the design behind alia’s tattoo as well. “triskal” sounded stupid..but “spiral” would do. and, as silver is alia’s favorite color, and the color of both the necklace and the tattoo, “silver spiral” was entered into the domain search.

Success!

but then the search for a decent, cheap, reliable host started, and after several false starts (geocities? evil. yahoo? evil), our heroine discovers DKBHosting, and actually PAYS them to host her site.

In a stop gap manner, alia points the procrastination.cjb.net address to the silverspiral.net domain and uploads what is left of the tattered Procrastination.

Then, she sweats, and swears, and gets extremely frustrated while trying to come up with a cool new “spiral” layout. the lead graphic is designed (along with about 8 others), and the triskal is decided upon for an email link.

That was 2 years ago. the Spiral is still changing. as it was only a few months ago that b2 was installed and made the spiral into an actual blog instead of a journal and regular site.

So, basically, all of this is a really long, laborious way to say..

Happy Birthday to you!
Happy Birthday to you!
Happy Birthday, SilverSpiral!
